World Day of Social Justice has been recognized at the initiative of Kyrgyzstan in 2009. It was proclaimed and unanimously supported by 192 countries of the world at the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly in 2007.
The event admits the need to promote efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion and unemployment. The United Nations General Assembly has decided to observe 20 February annually.
The General Assembly invited member states to devote the day to promoting national activities in accordance with the objectives and goals of the World Summit for Social Development and the twenty-fourth session of the General Assembly. Observance of World Day of Social Justice should support efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.
“This Kyrgyzstan's initiative is fully consistent with the goals and objectives reflected in the National Sustainable Development Strategy and the Programs for the Transition to Sustainable Development for the period of 2013-2017,” the Foreign Ministry said.
